Stepwise Method To Make LED Light Box Display

Step #1: Collect Necessary Materials

Before you start making your LED light box display, you have to gather all the right materials. These items help you build a strong frame, lights and power the LEDs safely. However, materials and tools may change if your needs are specific. But the main supplies and instruments you require for the whole smooth process include:

  • LED Strip Lights: Provide a source of light to your box to bright up the display area.
  • MDF Sheet: MDF sheet is needed to make the base or bottom panel of your box to support the structure.
  • Handle: During the manufacturing of the LED box, the handle will help you to carry your box around if you need.
  • Paint: Used to color the inside of the box for better reflection of light. We recommend you choose white paint for good LED brightness.
  • Plywood: Main frame material for your box to shape the body of the LED light box.
  • Tempered Glass: Used to make the top surface for transparent look.
  • Wood glue: Helps you to stick the wooden parts together strongly to hold the structure together.
  • Foamboard: To spread the light equally across the glass sheet.
  • Craft Foam: For soft bumper feet at the bottom of your LED light box display

Step #2: Cut the Frame/Sides of the Box

Accurate cutting of the box is important to set up the foundation for your LED light box. So, to do it properly you should measure ( ruler / measuring tape) and mark your plywood. These dimensions help you to create the right-sized pieces for the sides of your box.

Now, if you are using a router, cut the edges of the plywood where the glass will sit. Cut should be straight in order to get a clean box surface at the end. You should also make sure that cuts are deep enough for the pieces to fit without being loose or too tight.

You have to double check your work because if there are minor mistakes, your light box can’t hold other components together.

Step #3: Color the Inside Area

Once you have cut and shaped your box, the next step is to coat inside the area of your box with color. You should use white paint if you want a good reflection of lights for a bright LEd box display. For this purpose you can use any tool such as paintbrush or spray paint. You should cover all the interior sides of the box properly.

Because, if you have done smooth paint, it will help spread light without any dark pot & shadow. Let the pieces dry completely before you move to the next step of the process.

Step #4: Now Assemble the Box

Now is the time to build the body of your light box. So, take the frame pieces which you have already cut and painted. To connect every side with the base of the box tightly, you should use wood glue. You need to attach all the frames with glue and you have to ensure everything lines up neatly.

While the glue dries, you can press it with clamps or heavy books. However If you want extra strength at base and corners, you can use small screws and nails too. Your box shape should be square and have no uneven edges. So that nothing can disturb the distribution of light, later.

Step #5: Attach the Glass Top

Attach the Glass Top

Glass is an important addition to your LED light box because it provides your products a smooth and flat surface. So add the glass top to your LED light box. But you ensure that your frame is completely dry before you install the glass. You have to use high quality glue (like E6000) to connect the edges of the box where you set the glass.

We advise you don’t use too much glue, it can change the glass when you press it down. Then  carefully put your tempered glass on top of the box. Also fill and adjust the extra spaces and push it down but not too hard. You should leave glue for at least 24 hours so that it can be securely bonded.

Step #6: Use Foam Board For Light Diffusion

Next, you need a foam board to diffuse light all around the box sides. Actually this foam board gives you a balanced glow throughout the whole display of the box. Now measure the inside area all under glass and cut your foam board to match that size.

Well, white & thin foam board which has a paper layer will be your ideal option. Before placing the foam board, you should gently clean dust from the inner side of the glass. Then, press the foam board into its place.

You don’t need glue for this process, it will stay in position on its own. As a result, LED lights will be hidden with no harsh shadow when we place them later.

Step #7: Installation of LED Strip

LED strips are used to provide light to your display project. You should carefully stick the LED strips along the inside edges of your box frame. If you want smooth and uneven light, place these strips all around the box. In some cases you don’t need glue, so you can just peel and press LED strips in the right place.

But, if you see it doesn’t stick well, you can use glue or tape for extra hold. You have to ensure that the LED strips end near the spot where you will connect the power further. This is because it will be easy for you to plug it in later without any problem.

Step #8: Add Power System For Controlling Your LEDs

Power source is important for the proper functionality of your LED light box display. In this way, you have to connect the power supply with LED strips. Before placement you should make sure your adapter (12V or 24V) matches the voltage of your  LED strips.

If your LEDs have a controller, then you should connect it between the power source and the LED strip. This will help you to control the LED light operations manually. For example: you can change the color, turn on and turn off the lights etc.

Step #9: Finally, Install the Bottom Panel

To protect every single piece inside the display box, you need to add a bottom panel. It will give a finished look as well as support to hold inside materials. For this, take a  MDF sheet that can fit the bottom of your box.

Now, place it in a way that it adjusts accurately with the box. You can also use screws and strong glue to attach it. At the end, assess the position of the panel if it’s secure so nothing can move around inside the box.
