The Ultimate Guide to PCB in LED Displays

In the LED display industry, the PCB is the most easily overlooked but crucial component. A high-quality PCB directly determines the screen’s image quality, lifespan and stability. This article provides an overall and practical guide to PCBs.

What Is PCB?

What Is PCB

The full form of PCB is printed circuit board. Its function is to fix these components, such as LED light beads, chips, resistors, and capacitors, to the circuit board according to the design. The interior and surface of the board are covered with extremely fine copper foil circuits. These circuits are responsible for delivering power and signals to each LED chip punctually and accurately.

PCB Applications in LED Displays

PCB Applications in LED Displays

Retail LED Displays

Retail LED displays are commonly used for shop window displays, digital signage, and shelf advertising. Screens equipped with PCB can produce bright, vivid images with no blind spots. Store screens usually run long hours, so PCB quality is imoprtant. Premium PCBs adopt high-Tg FR-4 material and thick copper foil, and comply with UL 94 V-0 fire resistance standard. They run steadily and boost safety in shopping areas.

Outdoor Advertising LED Billboards

Outdoor PCB boards offer outstanding resistance to moisture, salt spray and mould. When selecting materials, PCBs must use substrates with a leakage current rating and a flammability index under 600 V. The factory coats the PCB surface with three anti-corrosion layers. These layers avoid short circuits caused by conductive anode wires.

The factory puts PCB boards through 1000 hours of strict high-temperature and humidity tests. Even when outdoor electrical billboards are exposed to harsh weather year-round, the display remains stable.

Conference Room LED Displays

Conference LED screens are widely used in office settings for internal work reports, remote video conferences and proposal presentations. PCB boards can fully meet your high standards for sharp image quality, quiet operation and a slim profile.

Most display devices of this type use black substrates or black-sided PCBs made with black ink, which effectively enhance image contrast and produce a rich, deep black visual effect.

When selecting a supplier, we recommend those with ISO 9001 certification to ensure the overall quality of the conference display.

Control Room LED Video Walls

The control room LED wall needs to operate nonstop and deliver video signals with little delay. In this situation, the stability, redundant architecture and thermal management of the PCB are very important.

The PCB panels can be equipped with redundant power cabling or a mesh power distribution layout. This design ensures that when a single line fails, the remaining paths can still transmit electricity normally. This effectively prevents a single point of failure from causing the entire display to malfunction.

Creative LED Displays

When choosing the right PCB for a creative LED display, you should focus on flexibility and tensile strength. This makes the display work well, and the whole thing stays stable.

During custom PCB design, we recommend using dedicated EDA tools to calculate the three-dimensional stress distribution and to conduct a durability test. This will ensure the irregularly shaped screen remains undamaged over the long term.

How to Choose a High-quality PCB for LED Displays?

How to Choose a High-quality PCB for LED Displays

Material

The PCB substrate’s strength, insulation, and heat resistance all connect to the display. Most indoor LED displays use FR-4, a glass-epoxy mix. So when you pick materials, focus on high-Tg with a glass temperature of 150°C or more. This prevents the panels from softening or coming apart. But for outdoor LED or bright screens, you can choose metal substrates like aluminium or copper. These metals have good thermal conductivity and dissipate heat quickly.

Layer Stack-up

The PCB layer stack-up affects how signals propagate and how power spreads. For standard P4 displays with bigger pixel pitches, a two-layer board is enough. However, for P2.5 displays with a smaller pixel pitch, multi-layer circuit boards are required, such as four-layer or six-layer boards.

Multi-layer boards have separate ground and power layers. This can shield against electromagnetic interference and eliminate ghosting caused by signal crosstalk. It also spreads the current evenly across the screen. Furthermore, the screen will not exhibit uneven brightness or colour changes due to the voltage decrease.

Thermal Management

The thermal design determines the display’s lifespan and uniformity. High-quality PCBs have small holes under the LED pads. These holes are then filled with a heat-filling material. This makes a set of heat paths. And these paths quickly move heat to the copper on the back and to the heat sink.

For outdoor and high-brightness displays, you can choose aluminium or copper substrates. Using copper foil with a thickness of 2 ounces or more for the power plane can also reduce the additional heat generated by electrical resistance.

Manufacturing

The PCB manufacturing process decides how exact the final product is.  For products with a pitch of under 2.5 mm, the LEDs are packed very close together. And this means the work needs to be very precise.

When selecting suppliers, you should focus on verifying their testing capabilities. Reputable manufacturers will offer continuity testing across the entire production line to ensure that the circuits are fully functional.

Environmental and Safety Standards

PCBs are used in many different jobs. So they need to get different certifications. This keeps them safe and up to standard. Then, when you pick board materials, first check the flame-retardant rating. It must meet UL 94 V-0. And then if a short circuit happens all of a sudden, the circuit will not keep burning or catch fire.

If the product is for export, you must strictly obey the RoHS restrictions on hazardous substances and the requirements of the REACH Regulation when selecting materials. If you put equipment outside or in wet places, then check the IP rating for water protection. This stops water from getting inside. And then the inside will not short out because of dampness.

FAQ

What Type of PCB Is Commonly Used in Commercial LED Displays?

FR-4 glass boards are the most common PCB material for commercial LED displays. They cost little and insulate heat well. So they work fine for normal indoor screens. But if the screen makes a lot of heat, then people use aluminium substrates. Aluminium lets heat out faster. And this keeps the LED chips safe from heat damage.

Which PCB Is Better for Fine Pitch LED Displays?

On fine-pitch displays, the LED chips sit very close to each other. So there is little room for wires. Double-sided PCB boards have just two layers. Then, the power and signal lines get packed together. And this makes them interfere with each other. But four- or six-layer PCB boards keep signal, power, and ground lines on separate layers. So there is little interference and a clean picture with no ghosting.

Which PCB Is Best for Rental LED Displays?

Rental LED displays need to be moved and taken apart. They also get bumped and shaken a lot. So the best pick is a flex PCB or a rigid-flex board. These can take bending and shaking without breaking. But standard hard boards often have bad solder joints when moved. Then the board material needs a high Tg. This gives heat resistance and good soldering. And a thickness of 1.6 mm or more is better for withstanding hits.

Does PCB Thickness Matter in LED Display Manufacturing?

Yes. The most common PCB thickness is 1.6 mm. PCB Boards that are too thin are prone to bending, and the solder joints may crack when soldering the LEDs. Thick PCB boards are costly and heavy. As outdoor screens are exposed to strong winds, 2.0 mm boards offer greater resistance to bending. Small-pitch screens generate a lot of heat, so using 1.2 mm boards actually aids heat dissipation. The appropriate thickness should be selected according to the specific application.

How Does PCB Quality Affect LED Display Lifespan?

Poor-quality PCBs have lower heat dissipation capabilities. So the LED chips stay hot for a long time. This causes the LED chip to remain at high temperatures for a long period, thereby accelerating its dimming or even leading to complete failure. And this gives dead pixels or a messed-up picture after some use. A screen meant to last eight years can become useless in only two. But a good PCB makes sure the screen reaches its full life.

What Causes PCB Failure in LED Display Modules?

There are three main reasons. Too much heat makes the PCB board come apart in layers. And then the circuits break. In wet places, water gets into the board. And this causes short circuits. Uneven pads cause the LEDs to solder badly. So they fall off when shaken. Then, standard materials and copper foil that is too thin also make the module fail early.
