Matrix LED Display – Your Ultimate FAQs Guide

What is a Matrix LED Display? What Advantages does It Have Compared with a Video Wall?
An LED dot matrix screen is a type of low-resolution display. It is composed of several small LED modules arranged in a certain pattern. Each module or area of it can independently display different texts, pictures, animations, and videos.
Generally, compared with a video wall, a matrix LED display has lower resolution and color gamut. However, the matrix LED displays have higher brightness, lower cost, save more energy, and show information more clearly. Moreover, the maintenance cost of matrix LED display is lower. When failures occur, you only need to replace the corresponding module.
What Features Should be Considered When Choosing a Matrix LED Display?
When choosing a Matrix LED Display, you need to consider comprehensively from three aspects: display effect, operating environment, and cost.
For display performance, you need to consider several aspects such as screen size, pixel pitch, color, and screen brightness. The suitable parameters vary depending on the viewing environment and distance.
For the operating environment, you need to make sure whether the screen is to be used outdoors. This determines its IP rating.
Finally, you also need to take into account the cost. Excellent performance often leads to higher costs. However, if the budget is exceeded, the requirements need to be appropriately adjusted.
Can Matrix LED Displays Run for Long Hours without Overheating?
Yes. We will design the cooling system based on the frequency of your expected usage. For modules that tend to generate heat easily, we usually adopt metal heat sinks or air duct designs. For large screens, we also add fans to speed up heat dissipation.
For scenarios that require continuous operation, such as billboards and control centers, we have the capability to promise continuous operation for 7×24 hours, without decreasing the lifespan of the LEDs.
How to Choose the Brightness for Matrix LED Displays?
The brightness should be determined based on the usage environment, viewing distance, and the content being displayed. Both excessively high and excessively low screen brightness are unreasonable.
Generally, if you need to place the matrix LED display in an indoor environment without direct sunlight, then 600–1200 nits is the recommended level. For those placed outdoors without any shading, the brightness should ideally be above 5000 nits.

How Long does It Take to Install a Matrix LED Display?
The main factors affecting the installation speed include: the size of the screen, the type of installation, and the site environment.
For small screens under 10 square meters that have a simple structure, the installation and debugging can usually be completed within one or two days. A larger screen will require more time. Besides, if you want a curved screen, or if you need to install it in an environment with complex conditions, the installation process will also take longer.
How Long is the Lifespan of a Matrix LED Display?
Based on 50% light decay, the lifespan of high-quality LED light bulbs can typically reach 100,000 hours or even longer. That is to say, when operating continuously for 24 hours every day, the lifespan of an LED is approximately 8 to 10 years.
But this is only the case under ideal conditions. After the matrix LED display is put into use, there are still many factors that can affect its actual lifespan: the environment, brightness, heat dissipation design, and maintenance frequency. You need to use and maintain it properly, and avoid a rapid decline in lifespan.

Which Parameters of a Matrix LED Display Can be Customized?
Based on your requirements for the matrix LED display, we can customize multiple parameters for you:
- Pixel pitch and resolution: For different viewing distances, we can offer different levels of clarity.
- Screen size and shape: We can assemble the screens into various shapes and sizes, such as rectangles, curved surfaces, arcs or irregular shapes.
- Brightness and color: We offer customization for brightness ranging from 600 nits to 800 nits, and even higher. The color gamut and grayscale levels can also be customized.
- Environmental Requirements: Depending on the usage environment, we can offer protection levels of IP66 and above.
Are Matrix LED Displays Suitable for Outdoor Use?
Yes. For indoor screens and outdoor LED screens, we offer different solutions respectively. The most important details of outdoor LED screens are brightness, protection level, and heat dissipation design.
We can achieve a brightness level ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 nits, ensuring that the screen content remains clearly visible even in direct sunlight. Furthermore, we support the corresponding cooling design. This lets the screen maintain a high brightness level while also effectively dissipating heat in a timely manner.
Does a Matrix LED Display Require Backup Power or a Redundancy Design?
The backup power supply or redundant design of a matrix LED display depends on the project application and operating requirements. For ordinary commercial advertising screens, redundant designs are not necessary. For certain scenarios, we strongly recommend that you adopt a redundant architecture:
- Airport, subway, and transportation hub command system
- Security Monitoring Center
- Data Center
- Financial trading floor
In these scenarios, if the screen goes black or the signal is interrupted, it may cause you losses, or even pose safety risks.
